Description
A KURO-RAKU SUMMER CHAWAN (TEA BOWL) Japan, 1st half of the 19th century Stoneware. H. 5.5 cm, D. 12 cm. The chawan, of baradai type, is of shallow form with vertical walls and a slightly constricted waist, set on a small, robust ring foot with an interior spiral turning. The rough, dark body is covered with a black glaze with scattered large pores, leaving the foot ring and a triangular area on the underside unglazed. The base bears a Raku seal which, despite its somewhat incomplete impression, can be identified as one of the official seals of Tannyu (1795-1854), who served as the 10th head of the Raku family from 1811 until his retirement in 1845. It is accompanied by a later wooden box inscribed "Kuro hira chawan" (black flat tea bowl), as well as a silk pouch (shifuku). With traces of age and use. Provenance: From a private collection in Düsseldorf.
