Description
A THANGKA DEPICTING VAJRAVARAHI Nepal, 17th/18th century Distemper on cloth. 64x55 cm. The thangka depicts the Dakini Vajravarahi with her characteristic boar's head, flanked by her manifestations - the blue Vajravarahi on the left and Narovajrayogini on the right. Dakinis are revered as bearers of esoteric wisdom. Along the lower register are two forms of Cakrasamvara, with Acala and his consort at the center. Kneeling donor figures appear at the edges of the composition. With inscriptions in Newari script and framed in brocade. With traces of age, partially damaged. Provenance: From a private collection in Germany; acquired in September 2007 at Koller Auctions, Switzerland, lot 152. A copy of the invoice is available.
