EINE THANGKA MIT DARSTELLUNG DES KARMAPA
Description
A THANGKA DEPICTING THE KARMAPA China (Tibet), 17th/18th century Ca. 119.8x85.8 cm. Distemper on cloth. The Karmapa, wearing red and saffron robes and the distinctive red hat of the Karma Kagyu lineage, holds the bell and vajra and is seated on a cushion over a throne. Before him stands an altar table with offerings. The scene is set in a flower-filled landscape, with a fruiting lychee tree at the upper left and a blossoming tree at the upper right. His attendants surround him. With traces of age, minor staining, some loss of color, and areas of creasing; the thangka is mounted and adhered to the backboard, and the reverse is not accessible for examination. Provenance: From a German private collection.
