Description
A WOOD NETSUKE OF A SKELETON AND MOKUGYO Japan, 18th/19th century Wood. H. 3.8 cm. The netsuke is carved as a skeleton seated behind a large mokugyo on a brocade cushion, with the handle of the mokugyo formed as dragon heads with long manes, holding a drumstick in its right hand, and signed "Tomokazu" within a polished area on the bottom. With traces of use and age. Literature: Brockhaus, Albert (1909), Netsuke: Versuch einer Geschichte der japanischen Schnitzkunst, illustrated on p. 41, no. 80. Provenance: From an old private collection in North Rhine-Westphalia.
