Description
A LARGE E-KARATSU CHAWAN (TEA BOWL) Japan, early Edo period Stoneware. H. 7.5 cm, D. 15.5 cm. The chawan is of a round form with a slightly bulbous body and a flared lip with three small indentations, set on a wide, narrow foot ring. Crafted from a rough clay body, it is covered in a lightly crackled, light grey glaze that leaves the foot ring and parts of the base unglazed. The interior features quick, iron-black brushwork of latticework with dots at the intersections; the rim is decorated with alternating oval dots and strokes, with further line patterns on the exterior wall. The black dots and lines are overlaid with a grey, porous glaze. Accompanied by a wooden box and a cotton cloth. With traces of age and use. Provenance: From a private collection in Düsseldorf.
