Description
JAN BRUEGHEL THE YOUNGER 13 September 1601 Antwerp - 1 September 1678 Ibid BULBOUS CLAY VASE WITH TULIPS AND ROSES, AROUND 1640/50 Oil on oak panel (cradled). 53.2 x 38 cm. Part. slightly old rest., min. old retoching. Frame. Dr. Klaus Ertz writes: 'The painting to be examined ..... is known to me in the original. After a thorough study of this painting, I am convinced that it was painted by the Flemish painter JAN BRUEGHEL the Younger ..... in Antwerp in the late 1640s. The colours typical of Jan Brueghel the Younger, especially in the variously coloured tulip blossoms, are typical of the late period in which I believe the painting was created. Although this flower composition as a whole is still reminiscent of the famous flower paintings by his father, Jan Brueghel the Elder, there are no longer any comparisons in the painting style of the painting under review: the very painterly brushwork here replaces the minute attention to detail that was characteristic of his father's flower compositions. In contrast to the earlier flower paintings, in which the blossoms are intertwined, here the large rose and tulip blossoms stand side by side on an equal footing and can almost be seen as flower portraits. Expertise: Enclosed brief expertise by Dr Klaus Ertz dated 2 October 2017. Provenance: Rhenish private collection.
