ZWEI SAKRALE FIGUREN: KREUZIGUNGSGRUPPE UND AUFERSTANDENDER CHRISTUS

TWO SACRED FIGURES: CRUCIFIXION GROUP AND THE RISEN CHRIST South German, 18th century. Lindenwood, carved in the round, polychromed and gilded, flattened at the back; the Crucifixion group is framed behind glass. Frame: 32 x 23 cm; figures: H. 24, W. 36, D. 6.5 cm. Christ on the Cross with the INRI titulus, flanked by the two traditional attendant figures: the grieving Virgin Mary and St. John the Evangelist, depicted as a youth. Christ as victor over death and the grave, his right hand raised in blessing and his left holding the banner of victory (bearing a cross). The figure stands upon a globe and is backed by a large, gilded halo of rays. Minor abrasions and damage; losses to the polychromy and gilding.
