Description
LATE GOTHIC CRUCIFIX German, likely 16th century Softwood, carved in the round, with traces of an early polychrome finish. H. 84, W. 52, D. 9 cm; figure height 47 cm. Corpus Christi of the three-nail type, with the head inclined sharply downwards and arms raised high. Slenderly rendered body with a pronounced ribcage and a narrow loincloth knotted at the side. Formerly in the possession of Baroness Benedikta von Papen: the crucifix was initially kept in her apartment in Düsseldorf-Oberkassel and later at the *Damenstift* (convent for noblewomen) at Schloss Ehreshoven in Engelskirchen; she moved there as a canoness after working for the Düsseldorf municipal social welfare office and served as the institution's head for many years. Passed by bequest from her estate to the family of the current consignors. Shows minor knocks and damage, losses to the polychromy, and signs of restoration. Provenance: Formerly in the possession of Baroness Benedikta von Papen (1918-2004), a member of the family of the former German Chancellor Franz von Papen (1879-1969).
