SPÄTGOTISCHE MADONNA MIT CHRISTUSKIND

LATE GOTHIC MADONNA AND CHILD Upper Swabia / Lake Constance region, early 16th century Lindenwood; carved in the round, gilded, with traces of an early polychrome finish; flattened at the back. H. 61, W. 24, D. 20 cm. Standing Virgin Mary in a gently swaying pose, carrying the Christ Child on her left arm; the Child turns animatedly towards her. In her right hand, Mary holds a fruit-likely an apple-symbolizing her role as the "New Eve" and the overcoming of Original Sin. The long, loose, curling hair and the drapery-modeled with deep, sometimes sharply angular folds-are executed with exceptional quality.
