SAINT CATHERINE Asturias, likely 14th century Wood, carved in the round, polychrome finish, flattened at the back. H. 63, W. 17, D. 16 cm. Standing, crowned figure of Saint Catherine of Alexandria. In one hand, the saint holds her characteristic martyrdom wheel; in the other, a sword with which she strikes the head of the defeated Emperor Maxentius lying at her feet. Minor chips and damage; restored; losses to the polychromy; shrinkage cracks. Provenance: Private collection, Hesse.
