SEATED SAINT POPE (GREGORY THE GREAT OR SYLVESTER) Southern Germany, likely 16th century Wood, carved in the round, polychromed and partially gilded. H. 100, W. 43, D. 42 cm. A saintly pope seated on a molded throne, wearing a triple tiara; he holds an open book in his left hand and raises his right hand in blessing. The figure depicts a saintly pope-iconographically likely St. Gregory the Great, one of the four Latin Doctors of the Church. Shows signs of minor damage, abrasion, nicks, and restoration; age-related drying cracks and craquelure in the polychromy.
