LARGE HALF-LENGTH FIGURE OF A BLESSING BISHOP ON A GLORY OF ANGELS South German or Austrian, c. 1680-1700 Limewood, carved in the round, gesso ground, polychromed and gilded; flattened and hollowed out at the back. H. 108, W. 60, D. 38 cm. A high-quality, fully modeled half-length figure of a saintly bishop in ceremonial vestments, wearing a mitre and a richly decorated cope (pluviale). His right hand is raised in blessing. Beneath the bishop is a dynamic bank of clouds featuring three cherub heads, presenting the figure as a celestial apparition. Areas of abrasion, minor impact damage, and losses; polychromy and gilding partially rubbed; signs of woodworm infestation; shrinkage cracks.
