'SEDES SAPIENTIAE' (Enthroned Madonna with the Christ Child) Pyrenees, in the style of the 13th century Carved wood with polychrome finish and gesso ground. H. 47.5, W. 17, D. 11 cm. A Romanesque depiction of the "Sedes Sapientiae" ("Seat of Wisdom")-an iconographic type from the 12th and 13th centuries in which Mary serves as a throne for the Christ Child, who is shown giving a blessing. The strictly frontal composition, block-like conception, and reduced, symbolic formal language are characteristic of Romanesque sculpture from the Pyrenees region. Areas of wear and loss of patina; damaged, with minor losses.
