MADONNA AND CHILD* France, 1750-1850 Ivory, carved in the round. H. 22, W. 6, D. 4.5 cm; weight approx. 340 g. Depicted in a gentle S-curve, the Virgin Mary stands wearing a long, deeply draped robe and a veil. She holds the Christ Child on her left arm; the Child is holding the Holy Scriptures. Minor rubbing and small nicks/chips. Provenance: According to the consignor, from the collection of Mr. J. J. C. van Hameren, Netherlands - private collection, Amsterdam.
