ROMANISCHE MADONNA MIT DEM CHRISTUSKIND

ROMANESQUE MADONNA AND CHILD Italy, likely Piedmont, 13th century. Wood, carved in the round, mounted on canvas, traces of polychrome finish; flattened and hollowed out at the back. H. 55, W. 18, D. 14 cm. Depiction of the Virgin and Child-seated or rendered in a strictly frontal pose-executed in the hieratic, self-contained stylistic idiom of the Romanesque period. The block-like rendering of the figures, the symmetrical composition, and the simplified treatment of the drapery correspond to the medieval *Sedes Sapientiae* (Throne of Wisdom) type. Areas of impact damage and other damage; significant loss of original finish; worn; preserved in fragmentary condition. Provenance: Private collection, North Rhine-Westphalia.
