Description
GOTHIC FIGURE OF A MOURNING WOMAN / MATER DOLOROSA France or Rhineland, likely 14th century Limestone, sculpted in the round; likely traces of an earlier surface finish; mounted on a wooden base. H. 46, W. 13, D. 12 cm. Handwritten note of ownership on the underside of the base: "Prof. Otto Linnemann, Frankfurt A. M., Dornheimerlandstrasse 21" and a label reading "Osnabrück - Hannover - 1902. Rom". Standing female figure wearing a long robe and a mantle-veil drawn low over her head. Her hands are clasped before her body in quiet mourning. The introspective facial expression, the gently curved posture, and the soft, trough-like folds of the drapery are characteristic of High Gothic sculpture from the 14th century. Likely a depiction of the mourning Virgin Mary from a Crucifixion or Passion group. Minor chips and damage; stress cracks. Provenance: Formerly the collection of Prof. Otto Linnemann (1876-1961).
