MEMENTO MORI 'DEATH WITH BOW AND ARROW' Southern Germany/Austria, probably second half of the 19th century. Wood, fully sculpted, polychrome painted and gilded. H. 80, W. 37, D. 22 cm. Allegorical representation of death with bow and arrow, a motif of vanitas and memento mori symbolism. Death appears here as an active "archer" whose arrow symbolizes the sudden and inevitable end of life. Minor damage, bumped and rest. Provenance: Private collection, Bavaria.
