CORPUS CHRISTI Franconia or Southern Germany, 16th century Wood, carved in the round, flattened at the back. H. 53, W. 16, D. 13 cm. An expressively carved Corpus Christi of high quality. The vividly modeled body with finely rendered anatomy, the head inclined slightly to the side with closed eyes, and the richly draped loincloth reflect the visual language of Franconian Late Gothic art. Stylistically, the execution is reminiscent of the works of Tilman Riemenschneider. Minor knocks and damage, losses to the polychromy, shrinkage cracks.
