Description
GROUP OF FIVE SACRED FIGURES South German, 18th century Linden wood, carved in the round, polychromed and gilded, backs flattened. Heights 18 to 37 cm. *Maria Immaculata* within a radiant halo: The Virgin Mary in prayer with hands clasped, standing on the globe and backed by a large, gilded radiant nimbus. Saint Sebastian: Expressively carved depiction of the martyr, clad only in a loincloth and bound to a tree trunk or stake. Saint Catherine of Alexandria: Dynamically posed figure of the saint atop a cloud formation, gazing upwards; holding the jagged breaking wheel, the characteristic attribute of her martyrdom. *Maria Immaculata* with lily: Standing figure of Mary holding a lily, symbol of her purity; at her feet, the globe and the vanquished serpent, signifying the victory over Original Sin. Saint John Nepomuk: Standing saint in priestly vestments-including surplice, mozzetta, and pectoral cross-on a molded Baroque base. Part. chips and damage, losses to polychromy, localized woodworm infestation.
