Description
HIGH GOTHIC STATUE OF SAINT JOHN THE EVANGELIST FROM A CRUCIFIXION GROUP Probably Westphalia or the Lower Rhine region, ca. 1240 Oak, sculpted in the round, flattened on the back, with remnants of old polychrome paint. H. 120, W. 36, D. 23 cm. A significant High Gothic figure of Saint John the Evangelist, originally part of a large Crucifixion group. John appears in devout mourning as Christ's most faithful disciple and traditionally takes his place in depictions of the Passion next to the Virgin Mary beneath the cross. The slender figure, the softly flowing drapery, and the finely rendered facial features are characteristic of Lower Rhineland and Westphalian woodcarving from the late 13th century. Damaged and worn; stress cracks; anobiid infestation; polychrome paint preserved in fragments.
