Description
SAINT NICHOLAS Probably Germany or eastern France, late 15th century. Limestone, sculpted in the round, with remnants of old polychrome paint. H. 101, W. 37, D. 28 cm. A late Gothic depiction of Saint Nicholas in liturgical vestments, accompanied by his characteristic attribute: the children in the tub, alluding to the famous legend of his miraculous deeds. The figure's serene monumentality, the finely articulated folds of the vestments, and the subtly idealized facial features correspond to the stylistic language of late-Gothic sculpture from the late 15th century in the German-French border region. Condition and description: loss of paint, right hand missing, one of the child figures partially damaged, paint preserved in fragments.
