SAINT JEROME AS A PENITENT German, 18th century Hollow-cast wax, polychrome finish and detailing; with glass dome. Height 43 cm (figure 24 cm). Finely modeled depiction of Saint Jerome as a penitent in the wilderness, shown with a long beard and clad only in a loincloth. He holds a crucifix in one hand and a penitential stone in the other. At his feet lie a lion-the saint's characteristic attribute-and a skull, symbolizing *vanitas*. Minor chips and damage; glass dome damaged.
