Description
SAINT BARTHOLOMEW Italy, around 1600 Terracotta, modeled in the round, on a pedestal. H. 72, W. 34, D. 28 cm, weight approx. 12.69 kg. Three-dimensional representation of Saint Bartholomew, who, according to tradition, suffered martyrdom by being skinned alive. The figure is tied to a tree trunk and depicted in an expressive posture, which emphatically emphasizes his suffering. The sculptural rendering of the anatomy and the tense composition correspond to the Italian late Renaissance or early Baroque period around 1600, when religious themes were often translated into highly emotional imagery. Partially bumped, rubbed.
