HEILIGE SCHOLASTIKA VON NURSIA

SAINT SCHOLASTICA OF NURSIA German, c. 1600 Linden wood, carved in the round, polychromed and gilded. H. 56, W. 21.5, D. 14 cm. Standing figure of Saint Scholastica wearing a religious habit and a dark veil. She holds a book in her hands, upon which a dove is perched. The dove is the saint's characteristic attribute, alluding to the tradition that her brother, Saint Benedict of Nursia, saw her soul ascend to heaven in the form of a dove after her death. Minor knocks and damage, losses to the polychromy, slight woodworm infestation.
