LARGE CANDLE-BEARING ANGEL Southern Germany or Austria, c. 1750 Wood, carved in the round, polychromed and gilded. H. 78, W. 80, D. 52 cm. Dynamically posed candle-bearing angel in a pronounced contrapposto stance, standing on a molded trefoil base with volute feet. The right hand is placed reverently against the chest, while the left holds a curved candle arm featuring a blossom-shaped socket and pricket. Minor abrasions and damage; restored; losses to the polychromy; minimal woodworm damage.
