ITALIAN SCULPTOR Active in the second half of the 19th century LARGE SEATED SUSANNA IN THE BATH Marble, fully sculpted, on a round marble base. H. 90, W. 41, D. 44 cm. Unsigned, in the style of Giovanni Battista Lombardi (1823-1880). Large depiction of Susanna in the Bath, the biblical story and idealized nude representation. Susanna appears in a modest yet tense pose, her gaze averted and her hand raised in protection-a reference to the threat posed by the two old men. The finely crafted anatomy, the soft modeling, and the naturalistic pedestal design with a water jug are characteristic of Italian salon sculpture around 1900. Partially rubbed and bumped, restoration on the toe.
