ANTONIO CANOVA 1757 Possagno - 1822 Venice (Follower, 19th/20th century) LARGE FIGURAL GROUP 'THE THREE GRACES' Cast marble, fully modeled in the round, on a semi-circular plinth. H. 107, W. 46, D. 31 cm. Executed after the original by Antonio Canova. A large-scale version based on Antonio Canova's famous Neoclassical marble group 'The Three Graces'. Depicts the three Charites-Aglaia, Euphrosyne, and Thalia-daughters of Zeus and personifications of grace, mirth, and beauty. The three nude female figures stand in a close embrace within a harmonious, self-contained composition, partially backed by a draped cloth. Canova created the famous model in two marble versions: the first (1813-1816) is now in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg; the second (1814-1817) is jointly owned by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and the National Galleries of Scotland.
