ITALIAN SCULPTOR Active 20th century BUST OF THE APOLLO BELVEDERE White and brown marble; base of dark grey Belgian granite. H. 62, W. 52, D. 32 cm. Large, fully modeled marble bust based on the famous antique Apollo Belvedere. The idealized, youthful head-featuring a characteristic curly hairstyle-rests upon a chest section executed in contrasting stone, set on a profiled stone base. The original work-a Roman marble copy of a Greek original-was rediscovered in the late 15th century and is currently housed in the Vatican Museums in Rome. Minor abrasions and nicks.
