Description
A STRASBOURG RENAISSANCE SILVER PARCEL-GILT BEAKER Strasbourg, Master Samuel Ölinger, circa 1590 Silver, repoussé, engraved, and partially parcel-gilt. Height: 9.8 cm; Weight: 138 g. Struck on the underside with the Strasbourg city mark and the master's mark 'SOE'. Tremolier line present. Owner's (?) monograms engraved on the base. This finely crafted beaker, tapering slightly toward the top, stands on a small ring foot. Delicately engraved bands with ornamental strapwork encircle both the rim and the base. The front of the body features a heraldic cartouche with the engraved monogram 'HG' and the date '1662'. Samuel Ölinger (also spelled Olinger or Oelinger) was an active silversmith in Strasbourg, who was admitted to the city's guild in 1577. He is considered the father of Paulus Ölinger, who in turn became a master in 1612. A significant example of his work is housed in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London: a partially gilt silver beaker, also dated to around 1590, showcasing his refined craftsmanship and ornamental technique.
