Description
A STRASBOURG BAROQUE SILVER BEAKER WITH TULIPS AND FLOWERS Strasbourg, Master Jacob Oberlin (1640 - after 1705), circa 1680 Silver, repoussé and chased. Height: 8.5 cm; Weight: 70 g. Struck on the underside with the Strasbourg city mark and master's mark 'IO'. Later engraved with the monogram initials 'I.W.' and 'E.W.' just below the rim. This finely crafted Baroque beaker is attributed to Jacob Oberlin, a renowned Alsatian gold- and silversmith active in Strasbourg during the late 17th century. Born in Colmar in 1640, Oberlin became a master in 1665 and later took over the workshop of his father-in-law, having entered the prestigious Strasbourg goldsmiths' guild through marriage. In 1672, Oberlin acquired the prominent house at Rue des Orfèvres, now known as the "Maison aux Cigognes", which he owned until 1695. Although the exact date of his death remains uncertain, archival records confirm that he was still alive in 1705, when he purchased a country estate south of Strasbourg. The present beaker, with its finely chased floral motifs-especially tulips, popular in Baroque ornamental language-exemplifies the elegance and precision of Oberlin's craftsmanship, as well as the rich silversmithing tradition of Strasbourg during this period.
