Description
A PAIR OF FINE ENAMELLED BEAKERS WITH ALLEGORIES OF THE SEASONS: SUMMER AND WINTER South Germany, probably Augsburg, circa 1710-1720 Gilt bronze, polychrome enamel. Height: 5.5 cm. Slightly tapering form. Each beaker is finely enamelled with friezes of putti in seasonal activities, painted within ribbon-framed cartouches set against a dark brown ground with floral and bow motifs between. The six scenes include shearing sheep, butchering a pig, making music, working in a garden with a rake, sitting by the fire with a muff, and carrying a sheaf of wheat. These charming genre scenes suggest the cups were once part of a set of four, each representing different months or seasons. Minor hairlines; minimal restoration. At the beginning of the 18th century, Augsburg was a leading centre of enamel painting. On gilt silver or copper bodies, highly detailed and colourful scenes were rendered-frequently depicting putti, allegories, and bucolic motifs, framed by ornamental cartouches and floral Rococo decoration. These refined objects were much sought after in European art markets, particularly small cups and beakers, which combined technical excellence with decorative elegance.
