A MAGNIFICENT MANTEL CLOCK Russian, St. Petersburg, Charles Auguste Bertault, 1893-1902 Gilt bronze, enamelled plaques with Roman numerals, glazed door. The dial inscribed 'Ch. Bertault' and 'St. Petersbourg', the lower left of the base with Cyrillic foundry stamp 'Cast by K. Berto'. Richly ornamented architectural case decorated with masks, caryatids and ornamental motifs. 66 cm high. The St. Petersburg bronze foundry of Charles (Karl) Bertault ranked among the renowned manufacturers of art bronzes in Russia in the late 19th century. Born in France, Bertault came to St. Petersburg in 1886 and initially worked with Félix Chopin. Following Chopin's death in 1892, he continued production under his own name. His workshop produced high-quality sculptures and decorative bronzes, including works after models by prominent Russian sculptors.
