Description
A RARE ICON WITH THE MOTHER OF GOD 'THE PROPHECY OF SIMEON' Russian, Yaroslavl, mid-19th century (icon), Russian, Yaroslavl, Alexei Fedorov Kolotschin, 1860 (oklad) Egg tempera on gesso on wood, verso covered with velvet. Kovcheg, partially gilded. Oklad of heavily repoussé silver, the garments adorned with river pearls. Struck with city mark, assay master's mark, fineness "84" and master's mark. Minimally restored. 32.4 x 27.6 cm. The icon depicts the Mother of God with arms crossed over her breast, pierced by a sword - a symbol of sorrow after the words of Simeon (Luke 2:35). She is surrounded by the Instruments of the Passion: the Cross, Crown of Thorns, Spear, Lance with sponge, among others. This rare iconography, which spread in Russia from the 18th century onwards, combines the Eastern tradition with the Western "Mater Dolorosa" type.
