Description
A VERY RARE ICON SHOWING THE APOSTLE PETER WITH TEARS (THE REPENTANT PETER AFTER GUIDO RENI) Russian, early 19th century Oil on wood panel. The border made of gold. Minor areas of retouching. 35 x 30.4 cm. The painting The Repentant Peter by Guido Reni, housed in the Hermitage Museum, is a powerful Baroque depiction of the Apostle Peter in a moment of deep remorse. Created in the early 17th century, this artwork captures the emotional intensity of Peter's repentance after he denied Christ three times. Reni masterfully portrays Peter with tear-filled eyes, clasped hands, and a sorrowful expression, conveying his inner turmoil and plea for forgiveness. The subtle use of light emphasizes Peter's face, symbolizing his return to grace through repentance. This painting is considered one of Reni's finest expressions of religious emotion.
