Description
A RARE ICON SHOWING CHRIST 'ONLY BEGOTTEN SON' Russian, Old Believers' workshop, 19th century Tempera on wood panel with kovcheg. The panel depicting Christ Emmanuel enthroned in the centre, surrounded by a large aureole borne up by two angels, above are the Trinity and God Sabaoth with two angels to the left and to the right. At left and right are structures in which stand angels. Two flying angels hold the sun and the moon. In the lower right a triumphant skeleton holding a scythe astride an apocalyptic beast symbolising Death, a victorious Christ dressed in armour opposite. On the borders two selected saints: St. John the Forerunner and St. Ionna. This icon illustrates the second antiphon of the Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom which begins 'Only Begotten Son and Word of God...'. Minimally restored. 35.3 x 29.5 cm.
