Description
A VERY RARE AND LARGE VITA ICON OF ST. ANTHONY THE ROMAN Russian, circa 1800 Tempera on wood panel. The haloes and background made of gold. The twelve scenes depicting the life of the saint. Born in Rome to a wealthy family, Anthony renounced his inheritance and devoted himself to the ascetic life. According to tradition, he was miraculously carried across the sea on a stone, eventually arriving in Novgorod, where he founded the Monastery of the Nativity of the Mother of God. Venerated as a saint in the Russian Orthodox Church, Anthony the Roman is remembered as a symbol of piety, humility, and steadfast faith. His cult became especially strong in Novgorod, where he is regarded as one of the city's heavenly protectors. The edges minimally chipped, partially restored. 61.6 x 51.4 cm.
