A VERY FINE ICON SHOWING THE VOLOKOLAMSKAYA MOTHER OF GOD WITH AN EMBROIDERED SILVER-GILT OKLAD Russian, late 18th century (icon), Russian, Moscow, 1823 (oklad) Tempera on wood panel with kovcheg. The haloes and folds of the garments made of gold. The silver-gilt oklad finely chased and engraved with foliage and geometric motifs. The maphorion of the Mother with an elaborate embroidery with foliate and stylised designs, set with paste. Marked with city hallmark, assayer's mark, 84 standard and master's mark. Minor areas of retouching. 31.3 x 26.9 cm.
