Description
A VERY FINE ICON SHOWING ST. NICHOLAS OF MYRA Russian, early 16th century Tempera on wood panel with kovcheg. The bust of the saint portrayed traditionally, his elderly face rendered with deep colours, his hair defined by delicate white brushstrokes, wearing the Bishop's omophorion. The background and border of the icon stripped to the levkas. The reverse partially restored. 28.4 x 21.5 cm. Provenance: Andreas Tostrup Urbye (1869-1955): A Norwegian civil servant and politician, he entered the diplomatic service and was stationed in Moscow from 1924 to 1939.
