A VERY FINE ICON OF THE SAVIOUR WITH THE FEARSOME EYE WITH SILVER RIZA Russian, 16th century (icon), Russian, Moscow, 1896 (riza) Tempera on wood panel with kovcheg. Christ is portrayed solemnly, his hair arranged to one side with a short beard terminating in curls. Painted traditionally in deep shades of brown, the features well defined, solemnly rendered with earthly colours. His garments dark green and red with gold highlights. The background and border stripped to gesso, restorations. Overlaid with a richly chased and repoussé silver riza decorated with scrolling foliage. Marked with city hallmark, assayer's mark, 84 standard and master's mark 'SS' in Cyrillic. 31.7 x 26.5 cm.
