Description
AN IMPORTANT SIGNED, DATED AND MONUMENTAL ICON OF THE ARCHANGEL MICHAEL WITH HIS MIRACLES Greek, probably Mount Athos, dated 1639 Tempera on wood panel. At the center dominates the monumental depiction of the Archangel Michael in armor with outspread wings. In his right hand he holds a chalice, in his left a sword. His solemn gaze is directed frontally towards the viewer, set against a gilded background. The wide border is decorated with numerous smaller scenes from the life and miracles of the Archangel Michael, including battles against demons, the rescue of believers, wondrous appearances, and acts of protection. The icon unites the majestic veneration of Michael as heavenly commander with the popular narrative tradition of his legends. Painted with saturated colours, predominantly reds and blues, against a gold background, with a raised borded, its inner side with a twisted border. Greek inscription with signature and dating along the lower edge of the central field. The inscription reads: 'Votive offering of the servant of God Ioannis, namely Skarbunas, and likewise of his parents Dimos and Alexandra.' Minor substance losses along the border, vertical crack restored. 113 x 78 cm.
