A MUSEUM-QUALITY ICON OF SAINT JOHN THE FORERUNNER IN THE WILDERNESS WITH SILVER-GILT OKLAD Russian, Moscow, attributed to Iosif Semenovich Chirkiov (icon), Russian, St. Petersburg, 1898-1903 (oklad) Tempera on wood panel with kovcheg, overlaid with a finely chased and engraved silver-gilt oklad, struck with the assayer's mark, '84' standard and master's mark 'E.A.'. Executed in extremely fine painting, with a decorative acanthus-leaf border and, in the background, a wooded river landscape with lion and elephant. Minor paint losses, oklad slightly rubbed. 31 x 26.3 cm.
