A MONUMENTAL AND VERY FINE ICON OF THE MOTHER OF GOD ILYINSKAYA-CHERNIGOVSKAYA FROM A CHURCH ICONOSTASIS Russian, Moscow, circle of the Armoury Chamber, early 18th century Composite of two wooden panels. Egg tempera on gesso, haloes gilded, garment borders richly decorated with pearls. Large-scale depiction of the miracle-working icon, created in 1658 at the Ilyinsky Monastery in Chernigov and soon venerated as a Hodegetria. It was regarded as a protective and wonder-working image, whose fame spread through numerous miracle accounts and engravings. The present work is executed in the characteristic painterly manner of the Moscow Armoury Chamber. Partial retouching. 98 x 62.8 cm.
