MONUMENTALE IKONOSTASEN-IKONE MIT DEM HEILIGEN MÄRTYRER HERMOGEN, PATRIARCH VON MOSKAU

A MONUMENTAL ICON SHOWING THE PATRIARCH GERMOGEN Russian, probably Moscow, 1913 Tempera on wood panel. Finely executed in great details. Of arch form. Saint Ermogen Patriarch of Moscow traditionally painted on a shiny golden ground with olive green borders. Portrayed frontal, full-length, blessing and bearing the Gospelbook, the saint dressed in full Patriarchal attire, including the sakkos with cruciform decoration. Minimally worn and restored. 96.5 x 47 cm. The body of the hieromartyr Hermogenes was buried in the Chudov monastery, but in 1654 was transferred to the Moscow Dormition cathedral. The purported relics of Patriarch Germogen were accidentally found in one of the crypts of the Chudov Monastery during the 1913 repair works. In connection with the Romanov Dynasty Tercentenary, celebrated that same year, the remains were canonized and transferred to the nearby Dormition Cathedral.
