A MONUMENTAL ICON SHOWING CHRIST IN MAJESTY FROM A CHURCH ICONOSTASIS Russian, 19th century Tempera on wood panel with kovcheg. The haloes made of gold. Seated on an opulent throne and cushions, Christ is blessing and bearing the open Gospels. His face depicted in subdued earthly tones. He is surrounded by an almond shaped area depicted in red. Throughout the mandorla cherubim can be seen. The blue glory decorated with seraphim, the red four-pointed star with the Apocalyptic symbols of the Evangelists. Four selected saints on the borders, St. Nicholas of Myra among them. Minor paint losses. 89.3 x 71 cm.
