A FINE VITA ICON OF ST. NICHOLAS WITH SILVER-GILT BASMA Russian, probably Moscow or Solvychegodsk, Stroganov School, 2nd quarter 17th century, Russian, Moscow, 1864 (basma) Tempera on wood panel with kovcheg. Twelve episodes from the Saint's childhood, miracles and martyrdom surround his bust-lenghth portrait. All are meticulously painted against architectural backgrounds or landscapes. The edges minimally chipped. Overlaid with a finely chased and embossed silver-gilt basma. Marked with city hallmark, assayer's mark, 84 standard and master's mark 'IG' in Cyrillic. 31.7 x 27 cm.
