Description
A DATED ICON SHOWING FAMILY PATRONS COMMEMORATING THE BORKI TRAIN DISASTER Russian, dated 1888 Tempera/oil on wood panel. The haloes and the background gilded. Alexander Nevski, flanked by saints including Sts. Mary Magdalene, Michael, Olga, George and St. Nicholas of Myra. The border made of gold, the stylised decoration emulating contemporary metal oklads. The composition is the result of a private commission commemorating the Borki train disaster in 1888 and the salvation of the Imperial family. Cyrillic inscription on the lower border, dated '17 October 1888'. Minor areas of retouching. 31 x 26.4 cm.
