Description
A VERY FINE VITA ICON OF ST. NICHOLAS OF MOZHAYSK WITH SILVER BASMA Russian, 17th century (icon), Russian, St. Petersburg, circa 1800 (basma) Tempera on wood panel with kovcheg. Finely executed in great detail on a gold ground. Painted in bright colours, the present icon depicting St. Nicholas in full length at the centre of the panel, holding a sword in one hand and the Kremlin of Mozhaisk in the other, surrounded by a black band decorated with silver floral motifs and twelve scenes showing events from his life. Oberlaid with a chased silber basma. Marked with city hallmark, assayer's mark and master's mark 'NM' in Cyrillic. Minor areas of retouching. 36 x 31.3 cm.
