GEORG OSKAROVICH SCHLICHT 1886 Vladikino, near Saratov - 1964 Berlin A MOTHER OF GOD WITH A CHILD Oil on canvas. 91 x 85 cm (F. 105 x 100 cm). Signed lower left 'G. Schlicht'. Verso: inscr. 'G.'. The painting features the Mother of God holding the Christ Child as the central, radiant figures, surrounded by a picturesque scene of Orthodox churches crowned with their distinctive domes. In the upper left, an archangel floats gracefully on a cloud. At the bottom right, a devoted crowd of worshippers gathers, led by the Three Kings, Melchior, Balthazar and Gaspar, who bow reverently before the Mother of God and the Child. Georg Schlicht was a German-Russian painter who fled Russia after the October Revolution and found a new artistic home in Germany. A central theme of his work is religious and mystical-spiritual motifs, reflecting his intense engagement with Christian iconography-particularly with elements of the Orthodox tradition, which shaped him throughout his life. Provenance: acquired directly from the artist by the grandparents of the current owner, thereafter by descendance. Private collection, North Rhine-Westphalia.
