He emigrated to Germany with his family in 1939 from the city of Rivne, where they had lived since 1915. The reason for the move was his wife's German origin and the fear of persecution by the Soviet authorities. The chosen theme of the painting is unconventional and does not correspond to the usual reference to time and place - a testimony to the artist's love for his country and his longing for a time before tragic upheavals.
