Description
SCHEITHOLT / DRONE ZITHER Presumably Bavaria or the Alpine region, first half of the 19th century. Wood; elongated, rectangular soundbox with a glued-on fingerboard; S-shaped soundholes. Length 90.5 cm. A stringed instrument belonging to the box zither family; it was widespread in the southern German-Alpine region under various names, including *Épinette des Vosges* (Vosges), drone zither, or 'Scheitholt'. Its simple construction-featuring an applied fingerboard-and minimalist form are characteristic of the European folk instrument tradition around 1800. Shows some wear and damage; strings and tuning pegs incomplete. Literature: Cf. Museum of Musical Instruments of the University of Leipzig, inventory number 411.
